Self-care tips when you are under stress:
1. Acknowledge your emotional needs
o |
It is normal that we have negative feelings when you are under stress. Different people have different emotional reactions. Every emotion tells us something important about our feelings for the event. For example, anxiety is triggered by perceived threats and prompts us to be prepared; sadness is related to loss and helps us to grieve the loss; anger is related to unfairness and motivates us to make changes. |
2. Get reliable and sufficient information
o |
It is good to know what is going on around us. Please make sure the information comes from credible sources and stop flooding yourself with excessive negative information which may further contribute to your stress. |
3. Stay connected with family and friends
o |
Support from family and friends is particularly important to get us through challenges and stay away from loneliness. Seek emotional support, understanding, and encouragement from those who care about you. |
4. Establish a daily routine
o |
Regular daily routine helps our sleeps and also helps to stabilize our mood. You can explore new interests and pick up old ones. Incorporate physical exercise into your routine to improve your physical and mental health. |
5. Be kind to yourselves
o |
It’s totally understandable that your concentration, motivation and productivity may be affected when you are feeling stressful. Be kind to yourselves and cater to your basic needs: eat well, sleep well, and allow some time to adapt to the new changes. |
o | Take breaks, practice mindfulness, and allow yourself time to rest and recharge. |
6. Seek help if needed
o |
If you feel greatly distressed, don’t hesitate to seek professional help from the University Health Service and the Wellness and Counselling Centre. Students with special educational needs (SEN) are welcome to approach the SEN Service for support in learning and campus life adjustment. |
