Together We Shine: Special Educational Needs & Wellness Week

SEN Service team together with the Wellness and Counselling Centre of the Office of Student Affairs will organize a Special Educational Needs & Wellness Week from 19 to 23 February 2024. A series of wellness activities will be hosted to raise awareness about mental well-being. Join us and learn more about our service through games booths, mindfulness workshops and a special movie screening. Together, let’s foster meaningful connections within the CUHK community.


The following activities are open to CUHK students and staff members. Details are as follows:


Movie Screening and Post-Screening Discussion: Time Still Turns the Pages
A heart-breaking film by director Nick Cheuk, this film stems from his personal experience and address issues such as student suicide tragedies and generational traumas in families. In addition to inviting director Nick to share his script ideas and film production details, the event also features Mr. Tsang Chin-kwok, the Executive Director of Samaritans Hong Kong, Prof Roger Chung and Dr. Ann Lau, Co-Director of the CUHK Centre for Bioethics, who will provide diverse perspectives on issues related to youth suicide and mental health addressed in the film.

 Red Cross UniVAL: Mental “Help” featuring games and bottle tea for relaxation

 Mindful DIY: Join us in creating positive vibes as we craft leather omamori and luggage tags together

 Emotion take or leave: Leave a message of encouragement and kindness

 Learn the dots: Discover Braille typing and craft your own bookmark and postcard with us

>  Speak in sign: Learn sign language with “Sign Town” game


Experiential Learning Workshop: Guided Dog and Sighted Guide Technique Training
Guide dogs are highly trained professional dogs that offer valuable services to individuals with visual impairments. They enhance mobility, safety and serve as loyal and spiritual companions. These working days act as "eyes" for the visually impaired, guiding them safely to their destinations and avoid obstacles on the road. In this workshop, we will invite guide dog users to share their experiences, introduce the selection and training methods for guide dogs, and teach participants how to use guide technique to assist individuals with visual impairments.

Mindful Workshop: Self-compassion & Mindfulness

Being self-compassionate is essential to maintaining mental health and fulfilling relationships. By actively practicing self-compassion, we build stronger connections with those around us and can easily resolve even times of conflict. In this workshop, we will explore self-compassion skills that can improve mindfulness and deepen our interactions with friends, family, and loved ones.

Speaker:  Dr. Lau Ngar-Sze has taught and researched projects on mindfulness, mind-body-spirit health and positive education for undergraduates, pre-service teachers, and in-service teachers since 2007.


Mindful Workshop: Healing Sound and Art Therapy
Expressive art therapy uses different art media: including music, dance, visual arts, drama, etc. as therapeutic tools. It is a communication medium other than written and spoken language, and the focus of therapy is its creative process. The therapist works with participants to explore, express, and find inspiration, so that you can achieve healing effects in your body, mind, and soul.

Speaker: Eddy To is a seasoned piano pedagogue and alumni of CUHK Music, which he then later acquired counselling accreditation in HKU. He actively integrated the concepts and different music techniques and teaching methods, striving to promote student’s personal growth through music mindfulness workshops at schools and organizations.
