Reflections from uShiners

With the support and cooperation among our team members, this event was successful.  Preparation works involved designing poster and souvenirs, connecting with the Hong Kong Guide Dogs Association, preparing materials for the booth, managing financial expenditure, etc.  Being the group leader of the team, I have learnt to coordinate the workshop and booth, as well as cooperate with other uShiners as a team to work efficiently and effectively.  The programme of uShine SEN Service Team has indeed provided us with an opportunity to convey the message - to promote a mutually inclusive learning environment in CUHK.

In organizing this event, I cooperated with other uShiners and shared our ideas. At the beginning, I thought voluntary work should include helping students with disabilities, which sounds more practical and consistent with our aims and objectives.  However, gradually I realized that promoting the message to the public is also important and meaningful.  This raises the public awareness on caring the individual with visual impairment.  Our group members had different opinions towards this activities.  Through which, we learnt to listen, understand, and accept others' opinions.  Moreover, I was the one in the group who was responsible to contact the Hong Kong Guide Dogs Association.  This enhanced my communication skills as I needed to convey the messages between the Association and my groupmates.

To conclude, I learnt the knowledge and skills which are different from the past voluntary work that I did.  Although I am not sure whether this event is considered successful or not, I am satisfied with the activities and the experience of working with my group.

Reflections from uShiners

It was the first time for me to assist in a university-wide activity and share the message of equality. Before the big day, we uShiners arranged meetings, handbills distribution and many other miscellaneous preparations. Without prior experience to reach a wide variety of students, such as having different languages and special needs, my group and I had to consider further in order to cater for everyone's needs. Luckily, with supporting teammates and staff, we finally made it :D

Another most unforgettable thing was the feedback from participants. The extent of reflection and inspiration after watching the movie was far more than I expected. What I gained was more than I thought too.

The event to watching a movie titled the intouchables with students with SEN was unforgetable because I learnt about the friendship between a man with disabilities and a black man. Both of them experienced discrimination but still work hard to have a happy life. Also, I was inspired by the black man because he stated that we should look the inner beauty of each individual no matter whoever they are. Do not judge a book by its cover.
